about
Half of my family died in less than five years.
Over that time I found myself having a lot of online exchanges with people who had religious belief in their life. Some were people I knew, and definitely good people, but most were strangers. I've no idea whether the strangers were good people...
Almost every person I encountered tried to explain to me that this was all part of god's plan. I found this offensive. I found it belittling of what experiences humans have forced upon us. I asked a lot of questions about why this might be so but I never got a single answer that made any sense.
At all times I kept an open mind, but all I encountered were closed-minded individuals who seemed brainwashed and unable to think for themselves. They just regurgitated what they had learned and tried to present it as something they believed. When challenged, they could never explain their reasoning.
After telling one person that my Dad had lost his faith after my Mam died, it was suggested to me that maybe god had taken my father as a way of telling us that he should have kept his faith and that I should have faith too.
Another told me, after my brother Derek died, that maybe he'd be still alive if he hadn't been such a vocal atheist, like I am.
Both of these comments were from 'christians'.
There were many more.
This song is about those conversations.
I haven't set out to offend anyone. That is just an added bonus ;-)
lyrics
HEAVEN KNOWS
Every word that’s spoken leaves me scarred and broken
In this and every language, comes the same old message
‘Come live with us in a world of make believe’
In the shadows there lies the answer
Behind the legends and the years of heavy lacquer
There’s a golden key
That keeps it locked away forever
And heaven knows where you could be right now
But I think they might be keeping that from me
This is the son
He died for sinners’ sake
These are the rules they sit and watch you break
This giant leap that they’re expecting us to take
Well heaven knows where you could be right now
And, I suppose, they could have proof somehow
But I think they might be keeping that from me
I’ve this vision of you as a hypnotist
How is it that we could let it come to this?
I keep saying,
‘I just need some evidence.
Something that can justify this pomp and circumstance’
Is that too much to ask?
Now heaven knows where you could be right now
And, I suppose, they might have proof somehow
But I think they might be keeping that from me
Can I get a sign, get a witness?
Something to help me through all of this madness?

Well, I would like to share what I like about the album Insider. Albums that are really good have at least one song that you play over and over. This album has more than one but without question, Hymn Of The Aten is a song that rivals any song from any album from any band! As for the album as a whole, it has an energy all its own. A must for any collection! flickfan
I love this band. Its a wall of sound. Heavy, intelligent music. Unexpected and never boring. The hypnotic voice of Sel is cool. Had the chance to chat with Sel when buying the Amplifier vinyl records from his Rockosmos shop. Makes the experience very personal and even better :-) ProgAddicted
